PROVOKEDmagazine: For women who are nowhere near done.

What Longevity Costs Women

A New Reporting Initiative From PROVOKED: Part Of The Midlife Infrastructure Project

We added decades to the American lifespan. We haven't built the systems to support them.

A woman caring for a disabled family member wonders what happens when she no longer can. A grandmother raising grandchildren struggles to find support. Another puts off her own healthcare because everyone else’s needs come first.

These aren’t separate problems. They compound, costing women earnings, savings, health, and independence.

And when the woman holding everything together finally needs help herself, too often the systems she depends on aren’t there for her.

If she can’t get the care she needs, how is she supposed to keep caring for everyone else?

WHAT WE REPORT

CAREGIVING

The unpaid work women do for their families and what it costs them.

WOMEN'S HEALTH

Research gaps, menopause care, medication shortages, and how AI is changing diagnosis, treatment, and access to care.

MONEY & SECURITY

Retirement, investments, the transfer of wealth between generations, long-term care, and what happens when savings run out.

POLICY & SYSTEMS

Medicare, Medicaid, insurers, workplace policies, and rules written for men and a population that wasn’t expected to live to 100.

WHERE THIS COMES FROM

PROVOKED has been reporting on these questions since we launched. Bone screening thresholds set decades too late. The Social Security rules nobody explains. What happens to a woman who becomes her sibling’s caregiver.

This initiative gives us a new dedicated beat.
