A one-woman newsroom, 185 stories, and more than 20,000 women who refused to disappear—here’s what we built together in our first year, and our plan to get even louder in the next.

One year ago, PROVOKED was a seed born out of frustration that I couldn’t find the magazine I wanted, the one so many women my age were craving. So I bought a domain with zero traffic, zero followers, and zero subscribers. Call it naïve, delusional, or overconfident. But I believed I could build the magazine we deserved—one that respected our wisdom and amplified our voices.
We officially launched on December 20, 2024 as PROVOKEDbysusan. From January through March 2025, PROVOKED was a one-woman newsroom. I wrote the first 20 pieces myself—everything from my crush on Pamela Anderson to why “old hag, bag, crone” are not names we answer to. The vision was never “Susan’s newsletter.” It was always a magazine created by women 50+ for women 50+, across race, identity, relationship status, income, and geography—because women over 50 are not a monolith. We’re driving culture forward, and together, we’re proving that relevance doesn’t expire. So in September, we migrated to PROVOKEDmagazine—a domain that reflects what this has become, and who it’s for.
What We Built In Year One
This year, that vision became real.
- We grew from zero to 20,000+ subscribers on nothing but belief.
- Our weekly newsletter sits in an elite class, with open rates over 50 percent and click-throughs around 6 percent—proof you’re not just skimming, you’re reading.
- On the site, PROVOKED now averages 50,000 monthly views.
- Across social media, we generated 3M + impressions and launched @provokedmagazine alongside my editor account, @provokedbysusan.
Behind those numbers is what matters more: a community of women over 50 who are story-hungry, money-minded, health-obsessed, culture-critical, and tech-curious—and aging on our own terms.

From day one, my promise was this: PROVOKED wouldn’t just serve women over 50—it would be made by women over 50.
Over the past year, I’ve interviewed 100+ women, built a team of 20+ contributing writers between the ages of 45 and 85, and hired women artists, engineers, and marketing specialists. Together we’ve published 185+ articles across life, money, sex, humor, health, style, tech, culture, and reinvention—including work from writers with bylines in The Atlantic, WSJ, NYT, Forbes, Bustle, AARP, The Cut, and Slate.
Every piece passes two tests:

Why does it matter right now?
If we can’t answer both, the piece doesn’t run.

You asked for more humor, money, beauty, fashion, and travel, and we’re listening. One of the benefits of being independent is that we can move quickly and pivot on a dime. We’re expanding humor by bringing more satire, doubling down on reinvention and life, and building style and travel coverage for women with zero interest in disappearing into “age-appropriate.”
Our Dear Reader and Minimoir communities exploded faster than expected, becoming a home for stories mainstream media still calls “too niche.” If you’ve sent us your 18-word life story or written your “a-ha” moment for Dear Reader, you’re helping build a chorus that sounds like us—not like what legacy media assumes we should sound like.
What Year One Taught Me
Building a magazine is the easy part.
Building a sustainable business is the hard part—and some days it’s both exhilarating and terrifying.
PROVOKED is not VC-funded, legacy-backed, or owned by anyone but women. Every team—editorial, tech, marketing, finance—is led by women. And every big decision runs through one question:
Does this serve women over 50 or does it shrink them?
Independence is our strength.
It also means we grow deliberately, consciously, and together.
What’s Coming In Year Two
In the coming weeks, we’re launching a paid subscription tier that unlocks bonus stories, a second weekly newsletter, and closer-in community benefits without locking the main conversation behind a paywall. We’re rolling out thoughtful sponsorships with companies that actually respect women 50+. And we’re building a recommendation program that rewards you for bringing new women into the fold.
Until then, the most powerful thing you can do is forward this to one woman who needs to hear she hasn’t disappeared.
We’re also expanding coverage into:

This fell into my lap, I began to read it couldn’t put it down!!!
63 here and I feel more sexy now then I did when I was under 50, heck actually maybe under 60 I have rediscovered my own sexual needs and found news ones I didn’t know I could experience!
My outlook OmgGoodness talk about changes in the last 40 yrs I have an inventory of historical events that changed my trajectory some frightening, delightful, deplorable and discussing to a marvelous mix of me.
Meanwhile other (non-vanisning) stand on my convictions alone like the ( mouse stands alone in a childhood song that I once sang to my children now my grand babies.)
Would I be the person to take charge of that feeling to be the only one standing up for their beliefs and willing to die for each of those beliefs. Damn straight I would, looking forward to year two.
